Hope Wallace Karney is a self taught artist and designer living outside of Baltimore, . Hope is known for mixing old elements with modern principles to create unique and whimsical designs for her greeting card line, Paper Relics. Her work has been featured in several national magazines, including Mary Engelbreit's Home Companion and Country Living.
Hope also works as a freelance designer, helping small, creative companies develop identities and grow their businesses.".
She aims to live every day embracing her Style Statement, (Nostalgic Creativity), following her heart, and finding balance throughout her life. All of which are reflected in the projects she takes on.

It has been quite a while since I posted any journal spreads! And I am very excited to share this one with you.
First, on the left is a spread I made using a treat I received in the mail from my dear friend Connie Govea Stuart (if you click the link, scroll down on the page to read more about her) She really is the best - every now and then I just get a piece of mail from here saying she was thinking of me - and it is always something amazing and always makes me smile. This was a halloween girl with ghost.
On the right side is a new thing I tried...
I have been really into sub-pages lately as you know - and I decided to take it up a notch - I used Pam Garrison's idea of altering a catalog for journaling to make expanded pages off this page spread. Follow the instructions to OPEN -->

It does make for a bulky page, so I am thinking I can only do one or two in a journal - but I had so much fun with it I will do it again for sure!

Cammy and I headed to Kelli's house the other day to do some Silver Bella journaling while it was still fresh in our minds. Kelli's studio is a perfect place for us to really spread out (notice her aqua tree which she carried all the way home from Hobby Lobby in Omaha - she had to break the base off in order to get it home - and look what a clever girl she is putting it in a vintage pewter pitcher!)
We (mostly me) really did spread out...
I do have a mini journal to share with you (which you can spy in the above photo), but I also wanted to add a spread to my regular journal, so that is what I worked on.
This is the other side of the 2 sub-pages I added.

No journal update this week - sorry! I have worked a bit in my journal - but I have been busy getting ready for Silver Bella this week, so no time for photos. Here is a sneak peek of a foldout sub-page I am excited to share when I do my next update post...
Happy November! I know it is late, but here is a round up of last weeks journaling...
I started off with a clip from a j.crew catalog - I just loved all the pieces and the colors together, and it made me think about style (and how I wished I was a thin as one of their models!!) and how I viewed style, etc. It was interesting to write down my thoughts and assumptions on style. The card that is the sub-page is one I got in Charleston on our honeymoon - not much to do with style, but the right hand side of the spread below is pretty random...

THis spread has an on finished section on the left, but the page was things I want to do in the near future. On the left was a quick spread about our honeymoon in Charleston, SC.
This spread was fun - it recapped the last weekend when I went to Charlotte's event in New York, and stopping on the way home in Maplewood, NJ. Fun Spread to remember fun times!
So, this week was light on the journaling, but I hoped you enjoyed it anyway! More soon!
Finally I am back in my groove and getting back on track with journaling. This new journal is only the second one I ever stitched, and I but the signatures too far apart when making it. So to help beef it up, I started using my favourite tape to add in bits of ephemera as sub-pages (for lack of a better words). This makes photographing and sharing my journal a little more difficult though. Does one really want to basically see the same spread twice - just to show the other side of a sub-page? I will do it for now, but if it starts to bore you, please let me know and I will chose just one side to share.
So this first spread was in the works for a while, and I went back to it again and again building on it. The left talks about marrying Mike, and the right some random thoughts, with a sticky from a friend asking me to be honest about something she made for me, but I liked the sentiment so it got added.
Next, is a spread I did after my Dream Box Workshop with Jennifer Lee, hosted by Kimberly Wilson it was a great class. I used left over scraps and wrote about what issues and dreams I addressed in the class. I sat next to Kimberly, and she was such a great listener and had some great words of advice for me. It really was a wonderful night, and the other participants were so friendly!
The spread below is an envelope to stash wedding ephemera (or as I wrote on it, future nostalgia) on the left, and on the right a page about Savannah and why we chose it as our wedding destination.
Now we start with the duplicate spread shots. On the left I did a page about my parents, using a photo from their wedding (and spelling their wrong!) and then made a sub-page of a photo of them the day before our wedding (taken at Back in the Day Bakery - yum!). I love both these photos of them!
No on the right side of this spread - i did a page about defining style, and did a sub-page about some shoes I am crazy from (Anthro) and why I love them.
Moving on to wedding spreads! This one on the left talks about our wedding eve party, which was a big hit (and I still promise to do a wedding post!). The sub-page is a postcard from the hotel in Savannah we stayed in and had the wedding in.
On the right side, it talks about lunch the day before my wedding with my parents (at Back in the Day Bakery, see the cupcakes we had for dessert?! yum!), and a little about the wedding ceremony.
This spread on the left was about friends I was happy to have at the wedding, to help me get ready and to witness this magic day of mine. It also talked about friends who were not there and how I was thinking of them. On the right is about the ceremony (a copy is in that envelope) and the photo of us at our wedding dinner.
Last is a half spread with sub-pages. It is a working page for week on of the unravelling further e-course I am taking. I taped in a worksheet, and a paint card.
So that is it! what do you think of my sub-pages? Should I just share one picture of the spread with whichever sub-page side I prefer? or share both versions?
Now that I have a new journal to work in I am much more inspired to work on pages!
Here is what I have done since creating the cover:
The left is the inside cover, which I have added a few things to. The right is just some lettering... talking about becoming Hope Karney soon (!). I also wrote a bit about how I try to so hard to "figure out who I am" so I can find my true style, but I forget that I already AM and already have a style that I just need to embrace. Was is that so hard though?
You may laugh to know this, but I worked on the right hand side (the lettering and color only) while getting my hair colored at the salon last night. See! Always have your journal and some pens/markers in your bag!
This spread started out as all hand lettered text, our guest list and rsvp info. But it was not doing it for me so I gessoed over it. I have some really bad gesso, I had to apply about 3 coats and finally added some golden wash in with it too. Then, Sweet Cammy gave me a HUGE bunch of coffee filters left over from our garland making day, so I had to put some to use (of course!).
Here is the spread now - I am still not feeling it,but I decided to move on!
Next up is a spread I started and have to finish still, but I like where it is heading so I wanted to share. Talking about creating one's own style.
Have you gotten any journaling done?
I found this wonderful Plan De Paris Book about the same time my niece and I were talking about meeting in Paris next spring (She is working in Lebanon and cannot attend my wedding, sadly. So we thought meeting up in the spring would be a nice idea. She is my closest age relative, and though we do not talk and email as much as we should, we have a wonderful time when together). So, with my head was already dancing with visions of a Paris, I had an idea!
I scanned the front and back sides of the book. I also scanned the little price sticker that was on the foxed front page that must have been there for ages.
I then scaled the covers to be a little larger (the book is small) then printed and matted them on single weight matte board. I also printed a small sheet of the labels I scanned.
Using binding tape, waxed cord and a needle, I stitched the journal together, using Teesha Moore's instructions (which you can download here) I used 3 signatures of 3, so it will be a good size to carry while gallivanting around the city of lights.
Once I did that, I covered the spin with a vintage pattern, and inked the edges all the way around so they were not stark white.
Then I cute out and adhered the sticker that was in the front of the book onto the back.
I lined the inside covers with vintage french dictionary pages, and used one of the maps for the book over it in the front inside cover.
Viola! Je suis fini! Here is the remake along side the original.
Now I need to make the second one (so we each have one) and then I plan to add more to them, watercolor the pages, etc, so I will document that and share it with you too.

I go through phases where I cannot get enough of certain things to work with in my journal. The best known (and it never really phased out) is my coffee filter phase. Well last night while I was working in my studio I had all my favourite supplies around me and decided it would be fun to share what I love to work with at the moment.
These tiny circle alphabet stickers from Jenni Bowlin are wonderful - there are so many of each letter which is always nice.
I mentioned this dreamy dupioni ribbon in an earlier post - I use it on my journal covers, or shown below, as tabs for a page in my journal (see below). It frays on the edges and gives it a worn look that goes oh so well with the antique papers I always am pairing it with. If you are looking for some, One Hundred Wishes stocks it.
Every since my Tim Holtz class I took last month I have been hooked on Glossy Accents. It makes things shinny if you put it on top... but what I love it for is it's adhesive properties. It is a little slow drying so you have to be careful not to move things around after you use it, but it is very versatile and has amazing hold. I get mine from The Queen's Ink (you can call and order - they carry the Jenni Bowlin stickers too!)
I love, love, love this tape. I have been using it everywhere, journal pages, covers, presents, notes, envelopes - I cannot stop using it. I used the pink stripped to cover the binding tape on my latest journal and I love how it turned out. It comes in stripes and solids, and is also available from One Hundred Wishes.
I also have been really loving the simple ribbon punch from the Martha Stewart line. I find these shapes are great to paste down all over my journals. And this is a good paper punch, the handle makes it easy to punch to your little hearts content without making your hand sore.
